ALDD 10th Anniversary Timeline

10 Years, 300 Performances, 12 Choreographic works in 80 Venues.

2015: Premiered In Pursuit of Happiness, performed by Lauren Ohmer and Anabella Lenzu, directed by Daniel Pettrow and music design by Todd Carroll; residency at DUO Multicultural Art Center (DMAC); Unveiling Motion and Emotion was awarded Honorable Mention Best Art Book/ Spanish or Bilingual from the International Latino Book Awards in San Francisco from the American Library Association Conference; book readings at Bernie Wohl Center and Cornelia Street Caffe;International Artist Seminar at Peridance in NYC; Unveiling Motion and Emotion sold 90+ copies, Anabella was a faculty member at Wagner College and Peridance Center and taught 350+ classes. AL/DD hosted the 2nd Year of DanceDrama Lab Workshop Series.

Anabella published her first book Unveiling Motion and Emotion and offered 8 book presentations in Universities, Museums, Bookstores …even in the Argentinean Consulate; Photographic exhibition Unveiling Motion and Emotion by Todd Carroll at DNA (Dance New Amsterdam);Unveiling Motion and Emotion for sale on Amazon! 20 Shows in 15 Venues; 200 Books sold, Interviews in TV and magazines, including NBC, Telemundo, Dance Information, Dance Magazine among others; Active member of The Dance Critics Association; 4th Annual AL/DD Summer Intensive for the study of technique and repertory.

Anabella celebrates 20 years of teaching dance! 2nd AnabellaLenzu/DanceDrama Summer Intensive Workshop at Peridance;  Choreographed for a work for the 100th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911, one of the largest industrial disasters in the history of New York City; 5th Annual Ciao Italy Performing Arts Festival; Anabella creates a YouTube channel with excerpts and examples of dance from pre-history to contemporary dance.

2009: Premiere of The Corral at Merce Cunningham Studios; 3rd Annual Ciao Italy Performing Arts Festival, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn: conceived as a bridge between the historic Italian community in Williamsburg and the more recent community
of artists who are living and/or working in the neighborhood. We present traditional and Italian-inspired work by contemporary performers and scholars.

Premiere of The Garden: first collaboration with composer Geoff Gersh & second collaboration with photographer Todd Carroll; Brooklyn Arts Council Grants to produce 2nd annual Ciao Italy Performing Arts Festival; first annual Embrace Argentina, an intensive Tango travel experience to Argentina for students and professional dancers; Became an official member of the International Dance Council (CID) through Unesco: Selected as a finalist in the New York Urban Artist Initiative; 25 performances, in 8 venues.

When Anabella Lenzu began this process in March of 2014 after the passing of her father, she had no idea what the end result was going to be, or what the product was going to become. Anabella began to ask herself how she was going to get to the heart of what she was feeling. So she began to write, and reminisce. With the material Anabella was able to come up with, there could be four or five more shows to include everything.

The creative process is quite different from the grieving process, however there are times where we find that they intertwine. When Anabella began working on this piece the two were tightly connected. The show was therapeutic. She began writing down stories, some important with strong moral endings, some bittersweet or light hearted. She wrote anything and everything even if it was painful, because this was what she wanted to give to her dad. As the process continued however, Anabella found that the two were no longer connected. Though she creates for herself because she needs to feel it, the work is not just about her, but it’s about anyone who has suffered loss. The show became less therapeutic and Anabella soon approached it technically. As she worked, the piece became about generosity. She became aware that there would be people watching the piece and wanted to give them a way to cope with something they might be going through personally.

Anabella and I spoke of the short time she lived in Italy between 2002 and 2005. She remembers the mourning dances. These were rituals that dated all the way back to Ancient Greece. Female dancers or actors of sorts would come and dance around the home of a family who had just lost someone, similar to an exorcism. They would try and cure the family’s grief by helping them to understand life and death. In Pursuit of Happiness has become Anabella’s own contemporary mourning dance, and she has really enjoyed exploring ‘the function of dance as a ritual’ the way it was used in ancient Italy and Greece.

Another therapeutic piece of this endeavor was the music. The tracking for the show is comprised of some of Anabella’s father’s favorite songs, environmental sounds, and a few other special sounds. One of the special sounds you will hear in the performance is a short song that Anabella’s father taught to her when she was just a young girl that you will hear a recording of her trying to teach it to Lauren, her dancer. Another special soundbite you might catch is the sound of her father’s printing press. Anabella was able to travel to Argentina and record the many sounds of her father’s shop. So what you hear is not just a door shutting, it is the door of his shop shutting, and it’s his printing press, and it’s his paper running through the machines. It gives the piece a much more authentic feel. It was a very ‘tangible way to document his printing in the show’.

This past week I had the opportunity to sit down with dance teacher, choreographer, and author Anabella Lenzu to discuss the development of her second book, Meaningful Gestures: Inner Thoughts and Outward Expressions. Anabella has been teaching younger generations of dance artists for over 25 years, and as she develops her creative process for writing her new book, she is bringing new depth to educating dancers.

Meaningful Gestures: Inner Thoughts and Outward Expressions is a companion to Anabella’s first book, Unveiling Motion and Emotion. While Unveiling was about Anabella’s inspirations, her highs and lows, stories of dance adventures, teaching methology, and insights, Meaningful Gestures will serve as a more direct educational guide for dancers as they discover their artistic path.

Anabella’s creative process for developing material for Meaningful Gestures displays her deep-rooted passion for educating people about dance technique and craft. Anabella has been engaging in thoughtful conversation with her students, discussing specific aspects of dance technique. This process of discussion allows for inquiry from the students. The students ask questions, Anabella answers them and together they use critical thinking to develop strong ideas. This process has been fruitful for centuries (just take a look at the ancient Greek philosophers) and is a beautiful way to impart knowledge today. As Anabella gleans from these conversations, she is able to write articles about the topics from a more personal and profound standpoint.

Anabella has written 32 articles since she began her process in October of 2014 and continues to write a new one every week and a half or so. These articles, which will later be divided into chapters, cover a myriad of topics and will aid young artists in finding their voice artistically and aid them in accessing their unique physicality. Anabella is working on visual aspects of the book this summer and is looking for models with different physiques, ethnicities, and dance backgrounds. Her husband, Todd Carroll, is supporting this portion of Meaningful Gestures, by photographing the models as they display various forms of dance technique. It is important to have dancers of different body types to display effective alignment regardless of shape, size and weight. Therefore, dancers of all backgrounds can relate to the material in the book. Further supporting the photography, Anabella is in search of an illustrator who will draw vivid diagrams of the muscles and bones, to provide imagery that is helpful for dancers to understand the inner support they are receiving from their bodies.

As Anabella continues to teach multiple dance classes a week, raise and entertain her two young children, as well as prepare her dance company for a premier of a new work this fall, the projected completion of Meaningful Gestures: Inner Thoughts and Outward Expressions is but two years away.

As a dancer myself and after reading Unveiling Motion and Emotion, I am looking forward to the completion of Meaningful Gestures. It will serve as a beneficial guide and reference, a continual resource, to deepen and understand the dancing body.
